How much does it cost to use the TipicME instant messenger?
The client itself is free :-), but the cost of connecting is dependent on the rate structure of your carrier.
Typicaly an hour of connection time and 10 messages exchanged will add up to about 70KB of data traffic. It is usually more economical to choose a flat-rate plan if you are using WAP a lot
When I start TipicME, why does it ask me to connect to the Web?
The first time that you start this version of TipicME it must connect to the Internet to automatically complete the installation.
Only AFTER this step can you then register your username and password to start to exchange instant messages with your friends from your cell phone. TipicME needs to do this ONLY the first time that you use it, so it is best to just let it complete the operation by itself.
If it continually tries to connect to the Internet upon start up, you should re-install it.
Why do I have to use a WAP connection?
Although we are aware that in some countries it costs more than a normal GPRS connection, but the Nokia Series 40 phones can only use the WAP protocol exclusively to make these connections.
The other cellular phones that use GPRS utilize the TCP protocol, which is not supported by the Series 40 phones.
How to start chatting with other users
After you get connected if you haven't setup your AIM, ICQ, Yahoo, or MSN you need to do so. I bring up the menu by pressing the joystick to the right. Then I get 6 icons in a box.
1. Three computers networked. - Used to enter your IM names & passwords you want to use.
2. A question mark in a talk bubble. - Program info: Version and Dev Team
3. A red button like in windows xp to shut down - Closes the program.
4. A small grey rectangle with something green linking it to a larger grey rectangle under it. - Your IM connections you have setup and then displays your buddylists under it.
5. A light bulb - Change your Status.
6. A blue cube with a plus sign - Add a contact.
Now even though you have setup your IM logins you still need to add those contact to TipicME in order for them to show Online for some reason. Maybe it's because I am using beta. It automatically told me which people were already online by displaying their name with an icon for the type(AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, or MSN Icon) But lately if I haven't use the Add contact in TipicMe I will not know if they are actually online or not. I can still see them in the buddylist and can write to them though. Once you have them added I suggest doing a quick test. I used my AIM on the phone and signed my wife onto AIM on her pc. Without her added as a Contact in Tipicme I could still send her an IM by selecting her on the buddylist and she could send back. When she sent back my phone beeped as to alert me I just got a message but it didn't put the notice from who. After I added her as a contact then I could see her online and that the message was from her. And could continue the conversation.
