XMPP/Jabber

Tipic uses XMPP/Jabber

Tipic uses XMPP/Jabber as the protocol of both the TIMP server and of our desktop and mobile clients. The advantages of using XMPP/Jabber are numerous:

- XMPP/Jabber is an Open Standard: it has been submitted to the IETF for approval
- there are many Open Source and commercial implementations of the Protocol
- no risk of lock in into proprietary solutions
- it is a server based, decentralized architecture
- coupled with compression techniques it is ideal for wireless applications
- a large community of developers is active in expanding the protocol for many different uses

More about XMPP/Jabber

Jabber gives you an IM address of the same format of an email address, also known as the Jabber ID or JID, so you can keep your Jabber address @yourdomain.com even if you switch providers! Jabber supports multiple "resources" for the same account, so you can establish and maintain your presence online with multiple clients, all with the same contact list. This is especially useful if you have a wireless client and a desktop client running simultaneously.

Jabber allows communication to AIM, ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo! via installed "transports" on our server. This allows for:

- maximum security (the transport can be placed outside your Intranet and cannot be hacked)
- only one secure connection open (including the server side connections to the other platforms)

What are the benefits of using XMPP/Jabber?

- Jabber is decentralized. There is no one point of failure for communications. This also means you are in control of your own instant messaging destiny, rather than being at the mercy of AOL, Microsoft, or Yahoo.

- Jabber is open. No company controls the protocol, and anybody can (and many have!) written plug-ins and clients for it.

- You can make your IM address be the same as your email address (@yourowndomain.com even!), rather than something like 19015012 or some strange AOL screen name!
